St. Joseph Health Services is committed to supporting adolescents as they work through challenges related to behavioral health. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides a structured and supportive environment where adolescents can address emotional, social, and behavioral concerns, while also learning healthier coping skills.

By attending just a few sessions each week, adolescents are given tools to build resilience, improve self-awareness, and strengthen their ability to make positive choices.

Sessions occur on site at our Parkersburg facility and can also be accessed remotely through telehealth. Telehealth provides a flexible option for families who live farther away or have transportation challenges. St. Joseph Recovery center will also be providing transportation for clients within a certain radius, as well as light refreshments before group times.

How Long Does the Adolescent IOP Program Last?

Adolescents in IOP will attend groups four times per week and participate in two individual or family sessions each week (in person or through telehealth). Excess clinical hours are provided to allow room for any
appointments or emergencies that may occur to where an adolescent is unable to attend group. The Adolescent IOP program lasts 12 weeks and offers a higher level of care than traditional outpatient counseling, while still
allowing teens to remain at home and continue school with its flexible group and individual counseling hours.
What to Expect in Residential Treatment

Curriculum

The Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured, short-term treatment option designed for youth ages 12–17 who are struggling with emotional, behavioral, or behavioral health challenges that interfere with their daily functioning. The program provides an intensive level of care while allowing adolescents to remain at home, continue attending school, and stay connected to their families and communities.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) are sometimes used in conjunction with inpatient programs as a way of helping clients adapt smoothly and seamlessly back into their families and communities. IOPs are also beneficial for clients who are not seeing successful outcomes in traditional outpatient programs and need additional support. Intensive outpatient is designed to establish support mechanisms, help with relapse management, and provide coping strategies.

Core Components

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) are an important level of care for adolescents who are struggling with emotional, behavioral, or behavioral health challenges. For many teens, entering a full-time residential program may not be feasible due to family, school, or social commitments.

Residential treatment provides 24-hour care in a structured setting and is often best for youth with severe or complex needs. However, not every adolescent requires this level of intensity. Many can benefit from a supportive outpatient model where they continue living at home, attending school, and staying connected with family, while still receiving consistent, structured treatment several days per week.

Adolescent IOPs are often the best choice for teens who need more support than traditional outpatient counseling can provide, but who do not require full residential care. They receive intensive group, individual, and optional family therapy services; while practicing the skills they learn in real-world settings outside of treatment hours.

Focused sessions addressing emotional regulation, stress management, peer relationships, and healthy decision-making.

Weekly one-on-one sessions with a therapist to address personal treatment goals.

Sessions to improve communication, resolve conflict, and build healthier family dynamics.

Skill-based learning in areas such as coping strategies, relapse prevention, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Psychiatric and general health care services offered and monitored as needed.

Collaboration with schools to ensure continuity in education and address barriers related to behavioral health symptoms.

Residential care may still be recommended for adolescents with severe psychiatric needs, active safety concerns, or co-occurring conditions requiring constant supervision. For others, IOP serves as a highly effective balance offering intensive therapeutic care while allowing adolescents to maintain important aspects of daily life. Referrals are welcome but not required. Call 304-916-1881 for more information and scheduling.
